The Church of Mother of God of Loreto is situated on the hill, just above the main road that leads from the village of Zali Log to Železniki. This area is called Suša. Once upon a time, probably in the 17th century, a local villager by the name of Koblar, found here a statue of the Mother of God of Loreto. The legend goes that when he brought the statue home, the next day it disappeared. Later he found it again, at the top of this hill. This happened a number of times and so Koblar decided to built a small chapel in honour of the saint in which he put the statue. Later on, in 1870, the local priest decided that it is time to build a church instead of the chapel at this holy place. And so it was. In just one year this church was built and it was blessed on 14.10.1877 by the then Archbishop of Ljubljana dr. Pogačar. In 1878 the main altar was built with a big statue of the Mother of God of Loreto with the Jesus child in her lap. But this statue is not the original one, which was unfortunately lost. The church is part of the pilgrimage route of Saint Hemma of Gurk. There are two paths that lead to the church, both reachable only on foot. The first one is near the Chapel of the Three Kings on the left side of the road that leads to Železniki, where there is a big parking place. There you can park your car and take a steep trail just behind the chapel that leads up on the hill. The walk takes aprox. 7 – 10 minutes. Be carefull on this trail, which is an interesting one. In fact this path leads pass another chapel with a source of healing water which you can drink. The other path leads from the main road just after the village of Zali Log and the start of the trail is marked with a board next to the main road. This trail is easier than the one previously mentioned as it goes along more flat terrain. It takes only 10 minutes to reach the church. The building is well kept and the church is a sight to see in the middle of the forest. Unfortunately the church is usually closed and so is hard to visit its interior. But you can at least enjoy in the walk in the nature and if you really want to take a look in the churchs interior...well then just take a peek through the big keyholes of the main door and the problem is at least half solved.😻

A mystical place for all open minded. A little lower is a spring of healing water. Donate for its restoration.
