I have a couple comments and additional info to share about the University of Kratie (UK). Please refer to UK's facebook page for information and documentary pictures. Opportunity, Affordability and Challenges (1) According to one of the reviews by Mr. Chhat C. Sopanha, the construction of UK cost @$12 million which is quite a significant investment indeed. Among the major courses are Agriculture (Agri-Science?), Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Agro-Industry, (Civil) Engineering and Management. There're also three faculties i.e. Fishery Science, ICT and Foreign Languages esp. English and Chinese. It is indeed a huge investment with ambitious objectives! (2) I am a big support of government's effort to bring high education closer to the people especially in the north-eastern part of the country. (3) The challenges UK, like most universities in Cambodia, faces are its sustainability e.g. finding enough competent lecturers and specialists--teachers, laboratory and its equipment, library and quality and relevant book resource in English especially in Khmer, and the operational cost, etc. Other important questions are, for example, the demand i.e. are students from the four NE provinces--Kratie, Stoeung Treng, Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri interested in the mentioned majors and faculties? And, is it affordable for them? History - The Japanese, The French and the KR and its Chinese Ally. (4) The UK is built on an old airport which itself has interesting history. It's laterite runway is 1,600m long. Some people said that the airport dated way back to the 1940s e.g. the Japanese army built and used it, the French colonial authority/army also used it. During 1976 - 1978, the KR repaired and used it for training its air force, transportation of tons of military supplies (ammo--supplied by China) for its war with Vietnam and transporting the injured soldiers to Phnom Penh. At night, the KR used a powerful Chinese-made mobile lighting system that beams some 2-km high into the sky or 2-km long, to light the runway and as guidance for its pilots/aircrews. The KR also deployed a Chinese-supplied mobile radar and several(?) air-defence units. Reportedly, there were Chinese technicians/advisors based here, too. Notes: (a) Re history, I'll add/correct any detail as deems appropriate. (b) KH translation of my comments above will be done at a later day. Or google translate can help do the job! God bless, everyone.
