The museum took pains to provide a sense of the cultural and political context in which the Garifuna found themselves exiled but free. The culture they created is still strong today, and shared more readily with contemporary technologies. The language is taught at the school next door alongside English and Spanish, keeping the culture alive and vital. Drumming remains a cornerstone. It was a wirthwhile, very edifying visit.

This is a wonderful, if small, museum where you can learn the fascinating history of the Garifuna (Garinagu) people, as well as learn about their culture. They also run a school on the same spot. It is a worthy institution that is doing important work to keep this culture alive and vibrant, and is well worth supporting if you are in the area. Stop by for a visit if you can!
