Kairouan, a city renowned for its religious heritage, is also known for being the Tunisian capital of the carpet. Discover the inimitable magic of these handcrafted pieces, still made with the greatest care today. The Kairouan rug is hand tied. Sheep wool, very thick, is generally used, preferred to linen or cotton. On its wide border, this rug is made up of parallel bands with superb stylized floral patterns. While in the center, a large field is occupied in the middle by a central diamond-shaped pattern. One of the most famous rugs in Kairouan is the Alloucha rug. Its dominant, very natural color is that of sheep's wool. In fact, in the last century, the inappropriate use of dyes had altered the quality of the rugs made in Tunisia. Since then, the artisans have chosen to go back to their roots.
