    The Umayyads decided to build a large mosque within the city on the ruins of a Byzantine church. It is the largest mosque in the city. The prayer hall is more than 60 meters long and 50 meters wide. Its hall is decorated with 30 granite or stone columns that were removed from the neighboring Roman temples, some of which are still decorated with Corinthian crowns. The walls of the mosque were eight meters high, and before its restoration in the last decade it was similar to the engineering of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus
