This is a comment to Rosaâs 1 star post: First of all I want to say that itâs very honourable to take a dog from the street. There should be more people who donât just look away. Nevertheless I have to defend the organization Simabo. Itâs easy to judge them when you only spent some holidays on Cabo Verde and didnât work as a volunteer. Itâs easy to say that âif there is space for 130 in the shelter, there is also space for 131â. The thing is that sometimes there is really no more space. If everybody said there should have been space for just one more dog, soon there would be thousands of dogs in the shelter. If Simabo had the possibility, they would save every single dog from the street but there isnât enough space and not enough money either. If you would have taken home a dog from the shelter that was ready for travelling (vaccinations done, papers done etc.) Simabo would have had a space for the puppy again. The sad thing is that most people want to save the cute puppies and not the ones that are already some years old. But they need a chance as well! Anyway, like I wrote in the beginning, it was honourable to take a dog from the street. I hope the story of this puppy had a happy end. A friend of mine spent quite some time volunteering for the organization Simabo. When she went back home, she saved a dog. She took one from the shelter. She didnât choose a special one, she took one that was ready for travelling. This dog is safe in Europe now and has a good life.
Very pleasant hostel run by a charitable organization for helping animals. Staff and volunteers are the best, rooms are great. Animals hang out in the office, but in the hostel area there was only a cat. Cleanliness was high enough my cat allergies didn't bother me. As is usual in CV, don't expect heated showers, though the property has installed solar showers that are warm at appropriate times of day. Highly recommended.
I spend a few lovely weeks in Mindelo at the Simabo hostel. The rooms were always clean, the breakfast delicious, the stuff was really helpful and you always met interesting people from all over the world. I highly recommend to visit the dog shelter to see the work Simabo is doing on Sao Vicente.
I had the worst experience with Simaboâs Backpackers hostel, I got attacked by 2 men of the hotel one night and reported them to the direction. The staff told me to not say anything because it would cause problems and ruin the hotel reputation, then they forbid me to go in the public spaces of the hotel. I showed them my bruises and they told me that I must have fallen on the stairs and that no one would believe that they hit me. I am shocked and extremely disappointed of every one of the staff, I am an 18 year old girl and clearly this hotel is not a safe place for women. I had never seen a place that dishonest and unsafe. Run away !
